RE: Slugs

I had the beginnings of a slug problem late this spring. I've a flower
bed that runs the perimeter of my back yard, and is about 4 1/2 feet in
depth. Behind the bed is all woodland, very thick. I have several bird
feeders in my yard, and two on the back deck, in addition to quiet bird
baths made from 24" plastic planter saucers sitting atop tree stumps
just behind the beds, nestled in the woods.

I'm a very naughty gardener, as I will water LATE in the evening if I've
worked over, not caring, just wanting to make sure my babies all get a
drink. I used slug bait (yeah, I know, shame on me) for about 6 weeks
last spring. Then I kinda forgot to put it out... No invaders/slugs.
None.

I think my little birdies are feasting on them, and I pay the
neighborhood kids for every garter snake they let loose in my
flowerbeds. I've spent FAR FAR less on garter snakes and birdseed all
summer, than I did on slug bait for the last part of spring. Also, when
I bring my plants home from the nursery, I sit them on the driveway for
several days before I plant them. The slugs get off the plant, as the
heat generated from the blacktop sends them running, and the asphalt
either cuts or cooks them, so they die before they can get off.

I can't remember the last time I saw a slug in my beds. On stuff I
bring home, yeah. In my garden, nope.

Go Birdies, Go snakes!
