Barb,
I would be surprised if your trees are crepe myrtles. Here in zone 6a
Kentucky, they are marginally hardy. A good cold winter can kill them
almost to the ground. They normally grow in a shrub form, but with careful
pruning you can get a tree-like effect. They are featured in Southern
Living magazine quite frequently and my zone is listed as the coldest these
will take. Experience has shown this to be true in my garden.
I have a hot pink one in bloom now that is like a monster due to our
abnormally warm winter last season. I also have a lavender which is much
more fickle and will die back to the ground each year. Right now it is
only knee high as it survived last winter, but I hardly think that it will
bloom this year.
Anyway, from your description it sure sounds like a crepe myrtle. Let us
know what you find out.
