Re: Eupatorium
Doreen, I had absolutely no idea that this plant was poisonous, so am
very glad you sent the URL. Fortunately, we don't have any cows or
horses. The variety that I have is 'chocolate', so that while the
leaves and form are very similar, the color is different. Seen against
the pale green of Sedum spectible 'meteor', with a pale pink flowered
rosebush (sorry, I don't have the name, it was a gift from a fellow
gardener and I neglected to jot down the name) in front of it, it both
stands out itself AND makes the others shine!
We have the normal, 'garden variety' Joe Pye Weed on the fenceline
between our home and the neighbor's, which has obviously been there for
years. The pale pink blooms are on very tall (at least 6 feet) well
filled out plants, and are just begging for accompaniment. I purchased
some dusty rose pink mums today, just for that spot. In between, I'm
planting an earlier flowering phlox, unlabled, which I rescued from a
nursery "Free-take away" table.
Time Life has this to say about "Joe Pye Weed":
"Joe Pye weed grows from 2 to 9 feet tall, and is found throughout New
England, south to Florida, and in the Midwest in Minnesota, Nebraska and
Oklahoma. Its 4-inch foliage surrounds the stem in whorls of two to five
leaves, and its flowers form domed clusters 4 inches across. When
bruised, the plant smells slightly like vanilla."
It grows wild everywhere here, simply there for our enjoyment! :-)
