Re: bed renovation

Nancy --

What can you tell us about kind of soil you have there in Arkansas? Here
in So. California, we deal with hard soil by adding powdered gypsum which
adds calcium and sulfur to the soil, and changes its texture considerably.
Gypsum causes clay soil particles to "clum up" leaving air spaces between
the clumps and "fluffier" soil. We have pretty basic soil here, whereas
in much of the country the soil is acidic and I'v read that lime is used
instead of gypsum to achieve the same otucome. Either way, it might be
worth checking it out with your local nursery folk and/or extension agent.
Gypsum is EXTREMELY easy to use, you just sprinkle it on the soil until it
looks like powdered sugar on a coffee cake.
