Do let us know if you find new information.  If not, I'm satisfied to 
consider it an annual, biennial or perennial depending on garden conditions 
and genetics.  That being the case, the confusion would be understandable.

Linnaeus was a student of Rudbeck.  I always assumed Linnaeus himself named 
the plant, in honor of his professor.  Can't say for sure, just a guess.
