Avril,
Thanks for the explanation of the two plants - very different. I
struggled to find a place for the schizostylis as the pink is quite
vivid & a little at odds with my mainly pastel colour schemes, hence,
planting it against the base of the full length bay window. Luckily
it loves it & now I understand why its growing so much better than
MIL's in her garden on the Fylde coast - it's wetter here (an
understatement) in the summer. Of course, I will continue to let her
believe that its as a result of my much greener fingers - after all, I
have to better than my mother in law at something!
One of my favourite alpine nurseries is on the edge of Snowdonia and
of course I've forgotten the name - its off the A480 in the Conway
valley, just south of Bodnant.
Cheers
Karen in Cheshire

I was given Kaffir Lilies as schizostylis from a friend's garden here in
Wales - they are autumn-flowering and frost-hardy - flowers are crocus-like,
delicate, on 2ft slender stems, glowing away when the annuals have been
zapped. Need lots of rain in summer, which is no problem in Wales. Clivia
here are for indoors. Wouldn't stand temperatures below freezing, and
flowers are trumpet-shaped, exotic. Seeds pricey. They also are known here
as Kaffir Lilies, and that's confusing, for they're quite different from
schiz. Avril in Snowdonia
