Re: Dutchman's Pipe

Gene-

I really don't know a whole a lot about the Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia)
except that I really like them----me and the unusual. I have never heard of
the A. durior until you just mentioned it. I did look it up and it is also
known as A. macrophylla and A.sipho. I recently purchased A. lucaneria this
one have variegated leaves and A. trilobate, this one is supposed to have a
"mustache" around the opening of the pipe....and A. braziliensis - I really
do not know what this one looks like - I was told that it is similiar to A.
chilensis which also has a "mustache".....I purchased the seeds. I guess
what I really like about these plants is that they prefer some shade in my
zone 9 and it is somewhat hard to find vines that will fair well in the type
shade I have. If anyone out there knows anything about them or
sources...please let me know.

About seeing them in the "Victorian" garden - from what I have learned
(mostly from my neighbor) about the Victorians and that period is that exotic
was sheek!!!! I guess they considered this strange bloom exotic and it was
something to talk about at parties.....:o).

Hope ya'll are having a great weekend out there. Spending the dog days of
summer at the pool!!! Stay cool!
