Hello Kemberly & others,
This is another of those occasions I wish I had paid more attention back
in high school when I took typing. If I were faster at this and had a bit
more time I would compile the information I have available on Dutchman's
Pipe. I can give you a hint and the name of the references.
Hortus 3 says there are over 200 species. Other references say from 250
to over 400. Hortus gives short descriptions and country of origin for about
18 species. One page. Hardy Herbaceous Perennials Vol. 1 gives two
paragraphs of description and background, goes on to describe one species. I
have many other wildflower books on the shelves and the Dutchman's Pipe is
curiously absent from all of them or only briefly mentioned in passing. Some
of these babies are from Russia so a few species would be hardy into zone 5
for sure. Most seem to be tropical and quite a few were from Brazil from
what I could see.
Have not taken the time to do an internet search. Next?
Kemberly and Nan can grow all of them and write up a report for zone 9
or so.
