Kaffir lilies


Thanks, Don, you put the distinction exactly. Used to call purple wild
bearded irises flags when we were children - it's a good way to remember the
schizostylis relationship - crimson flags - I hadn't heard that before. The
leaves of mine look green and upright on top of a south-facing wall, and
there has been hot for Britain sun for a couple of weeks - nothing sizzling,
though, like you get. Willow gentian (asclepiadea), makes a lovely colour
combination for early autumn here. About 2ft, easy to grow, unlike the
fussier alpine gentians. And Karen, is your alpine nursery in the Conway
valley called Aberconwy? They have a great collection of autumn-flowering
gentians, too. No mail order, though, but a beauty to visit. Avril in
