Donna-
You are correct - down here in SE Texas we are experiencing 100+ degrees
daily and haven't had any substantial rain since the 1st weekend in July.
But luckily we were blessed with a very wet spring so we have not been put on
water restrictions.
How do I handle the drought - well, I start by cutting my plants by 1/3 and
don't allow those that aren't drought tolerant to bloom. I only water (the
gardens) once a week but when I water, I water for 3 hours - deeply. My
plants are use to this care and seem to do very well. By watering less often
for a longer period of time you allow the roots to grow down deep, which in
turn, gives your plants a better chance of survival during such dry summers.
When you water for 20 min - the roots tend to spread shallow and this top
layers of the garden dry out very quickly.
Anyway - about the hollyhock - they will need the heat to germinate. If you
don't get a chance to do these outside you can germinate them indoors (later
in the fall) by putting your pots on top of the vcr.......lot's of bottom
heat.
Good luck and happy gardening
