We just got one last month. It was not the more expensive one, but about
$17 I think. We got it at the local farm/feed & grain store. The more
expensive one was a much higher wattage, but this one has kept the water
from freezing even when it's gone down to single digits at night. I am
guessing it is about 40 watts. Right now I can't get at the package, but
after next week I can check and see what the brand was and provide further
information. It seems to be adequate to New England weather. Actually, we
were surprised and pleased at how well it has worked!

The birds are too. They use it quite regularly. We have a stainless steel
bowl (dog dish with bracket) attached to a fence near the feeders as well,
but that freezes up. The birds go peck at it, but then remember that the
birdbath is not frozen. Amazing how smart they are!

We have one of those bottom heat mats for the seedlings, but I would be
afraid to put something like that in the birdbath. We have some flat rocks
in the birdbath so the birds can stand on them rather than on the foil
cover for the coil. We also have the extension cord (outside heavy duty
type) secured to the birdbath so the heater will not be dislodged.

Hope this helps. I can look up the brand, etc. next week if anyone wants to
know.
