RE: Neem and bugs

Claire,
I find this very funny. But then I have always had an odd sense of humor
:). I think any mealy bug (or other bug for that matter) that could keep
"treading water" for 2 or more weeks is surely a SUPER BUG. Evidently the
Neem doesn't disturb that waxy coat. At least rubbing alcohol dissolves it
immediately and is cheap. All the magazine advice to dab at the bugs with a
Q-tip that has been dipped in alcohol - puleeze! Give me a break! I bought
that stuff by the pint bottle and screwed a sprayer right onto the top and
blasted em. I never found a plant that was harmed by the alcohol and my
suspicion is that some of them crawled away (bare naked without their waxy
coats) to hide until they could secrete another coat and then went right
back to the same plants! I also found them attached to chunks of Perlite (a
pretty good disguise) and to the white plant stakes in the pots. I think
all that alcohol gave them a false sense of security.
Also, I would be very interested in your husband's secret method for setting
off bug bombs from outside the house. Does he propose to put a detonator on
the can or an elaborate system of strings? I don't doubt than an engineer
can figure this out........
Marilyn

Subject:	Neem and bugs

We mixed a very strong Neem solution and dropped the bugs directly into it.
Weeks later the good swimmers were still alive. Neem has not killed, that
is
dead, anything in my garden or winter garden. On the package there is some
instruction as to covering the plant with Neem based solution. The bug eats
the plant and then he does not feel well and may not reproduce.

On the other hand the bugs may just like Neem. Neem is a patented
product in the USA. In the rest of the world it is a brew from the Neem
tree
of India. If you lived in the correct climate you could grow one in your
garden and save a few dollars. Only in the US do you pay for it.
