Marge, Nothing special for the Impatiens in the GH. But my GH is also cool
in winter as you describe your bedroom. I always take cuttings for
insurance in early fall. They spend the winter in 4" pots snuggled in
amongst all the pots of Abutilon, Geranium and Hibiscus until about mid
Feb. when things usually resume growth. No fertilizer and minimal water
until then. They do drop leaves and have pretty bare stems by Feb, but the
top leaves and flowers look good. Yes, aphids do love that new spring soft
growth. Marilyn

Like Claire and Paul, I've had both white fly and spider mites do in
pots of impatiens I've tried to winter indoors in a warm, very bright
room. OTOH, I've had one plant growing in a pot of Epiphyllum
oxypetalum - night blooming Cereus - for well over five years...it's
just like the energizer bunny; keeps on going and blooms year around.
No pests at all. The difference is that this plant lives in our
very cool bedroom - hardly ever above 55 or 60F in winter - about two
feet from an east facing bay window. I've also had numerous pots
winter over and bloom in my very cool greenhouse at around 40-50F
with no pests other than the usual aphid attack that hits there about
March each year when it starts to get warmer and things start to wake
up.
So, am wondering if the secret is cool temperatures? How do you grow
your double rosebuds indoors, Marilyn?
