<< Ceres, this is an interesting topic to those who are the buying end. It
seems that for a good many years nurseries had the habit of going on sale (in
our area) around the 4th of July. The nurseries now do not have sales. If
they would, most customers wait for the sale believing it must happen as
plants cannot be kept. >>

Claire, in our area the sales usually occur Oct with no guarantees. I rarely
buy at that time because I don't feel the plant has a good chance of
surviving and due to the amount of work I have moving so many plants indoors
and preparing the garden for winter. Fall of 2001 I did buy a tree peony and
a couple of hostas which I left in the pots and sunk the pots in my veggie
garden. They did fine. I do have a few pots over wintering in the garden
again this year. Yet to see if they did as well.

The greenhouse does keep stock plants which are used for cuttings &
splitting. The owners are in depth hosta lovers and have a large collection.
Many are used for splitting. I remain amazed at the price of hostas when
they multiple so rapidly.
The greenhouse is the only one I know in our area that starts many plants
from seed. The others start with purchased plugs.
