I am also in Zone 7 in Md. and plant daffodils in the back of the bed,
fronted by either daylilies or hosta if it is shady enough. These serve
to hide the daffolil foliage which has to ripen and sometimes doesn't
until the middle of June. The Rudbeckia would be fine planted in front
for when the daylilies are finished. Also that "mexican zinnia" makes a
good low growing plant for the front of the border.
