Mass vs individual planting

I've enjoyed the discussion on Pulmonaria. I've only been gardening for three
or four years and information like this reminds me that I've barely yet
uncovered the tip of the iceberg! So many plants, so little space!

I'm curious about how other gardeners in restricted circumstances (lack of
space, money and/or time - I guess this is everybody) deal with the inevitable
desire to grow more different species, while at the same time recognizing the
aesthetics of mass plantings of the same plant.

This past summer I really started working on my small urban shade garden. I
need another year or two of experimenting to learn just how much light some
so-called "shade tolerant" plants really need (I'm pushing the shade envelope
with astilbe, digitalis, aconites, geraniums, columbine, campanula, lobelia
cardinalis and a few others). So perhaps I'll find in a year or two that I'm
better off giving the garden over to hosta, vinca minor and pulmonaria (my few
specimens of lungwort flourish in this border).

Who out there has sacrificed diversity for the appeal of mass planting in a
small space? Are you happy with the results?
