I think the preference for bare root plants is a bit of a generalization.
The only "advantage" that I can think of for bare root plants is that it is
a convenient (and less expensive) way to ship them when they are dormant
(assuming they have a dormancy period). Some state phyto laws probably
require that plants be removed from soil before shipping.
