Last year Heronswood listed two Galegas:
"G. ''Lady Wilson" sturdy, upright stems to 3' with a long squence of
semi-pendulant racemes of rich lavender blue. For the mide border in
full sun. Supply seldom meets demand. to zone 4 $6.
G. officinalis "Alba" selection from England. Slender white flowers
are borne for many weeks in mid to late summer from leafy clumps of
bright green pinnate foliage. Full sun in any soil, 3' to zone 5 $8.
I love blackberries. They grow rampantly at the farm, probably planted a
hundred years ago. After a wet spring, there is nothing better than fat,
juicy berries in a blackberry spice cake or eaten out of hand. We don't
try to control them, the wildlife gets their fair share.
I have even cut long thin canes and with heavy suede gloves, stripped the
thorns off, then used the canes to weave into a basket. The thorns strip
better from one direction than the other, can't remember which.
My friend Bobbie has 8 plants in a far corner of her yard and trains them
to a split rail fence. Just cuts down any that come up in the wrong
place. I say plant ''em!
