Barb,
I would think that any plant that you would want to bloom in the spring
should be sown outside right now. I have sown seeds of early annual
bloomers that I want to bloom with my tulips. I have also sown seeds of
larkspur and poppies on the surface of the soil. Press them in with a
board and you're all set for those.
Most perennials won't bloom the first year from seed, but the few that do
I've sown indoors. I'm thinking of things like purple coneflower and
black-eyed susan. I've had good success from sowing them indoors in
February and having blooms in the summer. I haven't done this in ages only
because both reseed themselves prolifically in the garden every year.
Hmm... perhaps these may be some you can sow outdoors now for bloom.
I'm sure others will give you ideas, but this can get you started.
