Pink Flamingos etc.

When I started gardening, I soon became a landscape 'snob,'
disdaining flamingos, gnomes, etc. Over the years, the kids
have given us gifts calculated to break down the barrier and
get some humor into our gardens. On Father's Day a few years
ago, one of our daughters gave my husband a pair of pink flamingos -
good sized, on long metal stakes. With a wry smile, I placed these
under a rosa rubrifolia shrub and over the years, some nice
geraniums have grown around the birds, along with some grey
artemesias. The flamingos stay out year round and look cheerful
& gay against snow and grey winter days. They are now so much
a feature of our garden, I wouldn't be without 'em! The
flamingos, along with a birdhouse shaped like a malevolent cartoonish
cat's head from our other daughter, remind us to have fun and not take
life too seriously - including gardening. My philosophy is, follow
the 'rules' that fit your space and needs, and ignore the rest.
Seems to work...

I like the white egrets idea and have a perfect shade bed for them!

P.S. We had friends who had peacocks when I was a kid. I remembering
sleeping over and being kept awake by the screaming of the birds (sounds
like somebody being murdered). And they didn't have clipped wings, so
they actually flew up into the trees. Nothing like being scared to death
when you're 9 years old by a giant screaming bird swooping down from a
tree! Gorgeous, though.
