I'm not an expert on these things, but these are a few of the ones
recommended to me on the dahlia list when I asked about it. Some may well be
available in the UK.
David Howard is an orange formal decorative type, which is in the normal 4
ft tall size range. Englehardt's Matador is another large flowered, this
time informal decorative in purple (I don't think they us the informal and
formal decorative classes in the UK).
Master David's Choice is a semicactus in red, and Midnight Sun is a formal
decorative in yellow. I don't particularly care for these large plants as
part of a mixed border-they usually require staking and get too tall. Bishop
of Llandaff and Japanese Bishop are shorter-at least in my garden between
30-36 inches, and the semidouble flowers don't get heavy enough to require
staking.
I have also heard good things about Preston Park, which is a 30" tall single
with scarlet flowers, and Moonfire which is a taller plant with 3 1/2"
tangerine flowers. Most of the dahlia catalogues seem to list the dark
foliaged plants and I can only suggest that you send away to some of the UK
suppliers and see what they have.
