Flea beetles can transmit viruses and bacterial diseases, too, so you do want 
to prevent them.  Margaret's suggestion of row covers is a good one.  

You might also want to try beneficial nematodes which will eat the larvae in 
the soil.  If you don't have a local source, you can mail order them from The 
Bug Store - http://www.bugstore.com/

I agree with you, Sevin is not a good idea.  If covers and nematodes don't do 
the trick, an alternative spray can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon of 
isopropyl alcohol with a pint of diluted pyrethrum.  --Janis
