Oriental Lilies

Donna,

someone on the lily round-robin told me that the best way to grow orientals
in our humid summer regions is to bury them 12" deep so that they will stay
cool. Another tip was to plant them in partial shade so that the colors
will stay true. I've always had a problem with fading, so I've planted a
few in these conditions this fall so I'll see if they do better.

It was also advised that we incorporate leaf mold/organic elements to keep
the soil rich and provide really good drainage during the winter. They
dislike moisture because they'll rot. While the orientals aren't fussy,
they just don't hold up well in hot, humid conditions. I would recommend
that you try some species lilies, as I've had fantastic luck with them.

Asiatic lilies will take just about anything. About your 'Lollipop', a
member on the lily list combined it with yellow sundrops and blue centaurea
'John Coutts'. The photo was quite lovely. Be forewarned that there was
mixed feeling about this particular lily: some felt it too gaudy, some
liked it for just that reason. In either case, both sides acknowledged
that it was extremely hardy and prolific.
