I have never been able to grow these in the garden but you may not want to as
they are not vigorous and do not make full clumps. I have one miniature (no
label under the snow) of this clan in a rock garden and it lives on but does
not flourish.
When we had a summer house in the Adirondacks, I often saw them on the very
shady wooded trails. This would indicate that they are VERY hardy and
require a moist acid soil. This fern nearly always grew alone, no other
ferns nearby. There may be different forms in other parts of the country.
Transplanting them from our summer house to the farm was not very successful,
even with buckets of native soil brought along.
Alas, not all things will grow everywhere.
