Quoted directly from a Jackson and Perkins 2001 catalog:
<<<<"Hellebore Mix (it is Helleborus orientalis being offered), This
clay-busting winter bloomer thrives under
trees.................................................They thrive in tough
soils and require almost no maintenance to come back fuller and more
attractive each year. And deer find them unpalatable." >>>>
Now, I have two big clumps of this plant. I mulch it and see that it is
kept from drying out (not easy some of the past 3/4 years). I have it under
trees and occasionally chop out the tree roots. I cover the clumps with
piles of leaves or the foliage is ratty in spring. I leave the leaf mulch in
place year round. We can see these plants from windows of the house so try
to keep them looking good.
So what about "clay-busting"?
