I may have missed some of these messages so if I repeat......
Did anyone say that poppy seed hardy in the northern zones need to be in full
sun, no shade from other plants. They also should be grown in lean soil with
excellent drainage. Some of the opium poppies will take some shade but the
others will mature too late if shaded and bloom will be sparse and plants
weak.
It does not seem to matter here whether the seed is sown spring or fall.
There is a belief by all the older gardeners I have met that sprinkling poppy
seed on snow is necessary for germination but that is not true.
Disturbance of the soil will cause poppy seed to germinate outdoors. If you
have areas where seed has fallen and you gently cultivate when the sun has
dried the spring runoffs, they will usually germinate immediately. If you
plant in spring, plant early and mark the area, some warmth is also needed.
