Same thoughts as always. If it died suddenly it may been eaten. Hellebores
are thought to be highly toxic but it does not stop deer so a vole may have
been at work.
Most of the suddenly dead plants in my garden are eaten by some mouse or
vole. I always dig them up and check to see if there are roots. At the same
time you would notice if the stems were soft or the roots showed signs of
some rot. If that is the case, don't plant another near it.
