Then, suddenly, in October, the leaves started dying. The plant
went from healthy looking to dead in the space of about 2 weeks. I'd hoped
it was going dormant or something (no experience with these) but it hasn't
returned. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Drought might have done it in-but its not indicated that it was real dry. Other wise plants sometimes are attacked by a fungi-maybe black rot. Did the plant "die" from the leaves down or from the roots up? Also check to make sure the crown is no more than a 1/2 - 3/4 inch deep in the soil.
We've had a warm spell here and the hels planted in one of the open beds has suffered some frost damage-and I will end up cutting off the leaves this spring-the new shoots look great though.
the potted one gallon plants under the tarp look great-almost as fresh as when they were covered.
