How ironic that this subject would come up right now as I too have questions regards C.montana..
Tell me Don does yours bloom most years?My understanding is that its not so much the vine's hardiness as the bloom buds carrying over winter and being killed or badly burned in winter temps..The big question is what winter(low) temps are we talking here?I want a vanilla scented one so bad BUT need more info from those who have grown them.

Maybe a heavy mulch would be better than deeper planting. My C. montana has put up (briefly) with temps below -20F, but don't know how it would fare with those temps for longer periods of time. In milder years (i.e, the past 3, it may survive for several feet above ground.
Any experienced clematiphiles out there?
