Hello Linda,
There are several ways to approach this seed sowing business. If you want
to get an early jump on the season the greenhouse is a wonderful tool. in
this case you need to be aware of which perennials will respond to warmth
and germinate without the required cold period. in some perennials you can
get almost instant results and blooms the first year. Foxglove and Balloon
Flowers are two examples. you kind of have to know your seeds.
In many of the hardy perennials they require a cold period, then warm to
germinate. Some require warm, cold, warm, such as Peony. Miss the cycle and
it takes another year of cycles to get them to germinate. There are also
seeds such as Solomon Seal that require a double set of cycles to
germinate.
I treat all of my seeds the same around here both for the nursery and my
personal needs. I sow my seeds as they become available from July up
through December and place them outside in open cold frames and let them
ride with the weather. Most will germinate in spring. The ones that do not
get moved to a holding area for another year. I just keep them from drying
our and that is my only attention given to them for the most part.
I also use the grit method for sowing and this has helped with germination
over the past few years.
