We increased our butterflies 100% when we started growing Joe Pye Weed.
Now we grow it and other members of its family. Many of the Swallowtails
cannot resist Fennel, particularly the Black Swallowtail. If you are
lucky enough to live in an area where Paw Paws grow Zebra Swallowtail
find this very attractive. Ironweed also seems to attract swallowtail in
our area. Actually most butterflies are attracted to flowers that have
flat flower heads such as Queens Anne Lace or Sedium Autumn Joy- it gives
then a place to land, if the flower happens to be bright, reds, oranges,
etc. so much the better. White Phlox such as Mt Fuji or David seem to
draw butterflies although we have not noticed this on the bluish
colors. This is just off the top of my head and we are getting carried
away. Hope this gives you a few ideas.
