Since you asked, here is some more about roundup.
As I understand it, it enters the leaves through the open stomates and
travels down through the plant killing it at the root level. So spraying it
when the stomates are open, during the day when it is busy
photosynthesising, is a good time. Also, since the stomates(the leaves air
holes) are usually located on the underside of the leaves you would want to
spray the underside of the leaves as well. Finally, since Ivy leaves are
waxy and glossy, the spray runs off easily and the addition of a little Ivory
or other dish soap would help the soap wet the leaves.
This was the scoop back when I was in school.
I still have a hard time spraying and prefer to pull weeds whenever
possible but some situations call for drastic measures. English Ivy and
Poison Oak were the two in my garden and except for the neighbors fence
which is covered with ivy and an occasional bird dropped seedling our yard
has that problem under control.
Give a Weed an inch and it will take a yard.
Weed it and reap!
Happy Weeding!
