I've had very good success rooting the Black Pussy Willow (Salix
melanostachys) in coarse sand in a clay pot set in a saucer kept full of
water - but they will root in a vase, too - I find there's a better chance
of them growing on, tho' if rooted in a medium. Mostly do it in spring,
but have done it just about any time of year...these are very easy rooters
as a species. Early in the season gives you a better plant to winter over
in the ground outside the first season...easier if you don't have a
greenhouse or good cold frame.
