Maria,
No, the Cyclamen you got in the store is a cultivar of C. persicum, which
is not hardy in MD, but makes a great houseplant if you can give it cool
room temperatures and bright light - I've got some I've had for years -
bloom their heads off; even set seed last year and I planted the seed and
have babies needing repotting badly. C. coum is quite different - much
smaller flowers with cute rounded ends...can come in an amazing variety of
leaf patterns, some all silver except for the rim and some silver with a
Christmas tree pattern in the center...totally charming plants for woodland
gardens AND hardy in MD. If you'd like to see some photos of C. coum and
C. hederifolium (perhaps the hardiest), see my article on Seneca Hills
Nursery. Nursery owner, Ellen Hornig sent me slides to scan for it of
various Cyclamen - they're one of her specialties. I got some of the C.
coum silver leaf with the dark outer rim and the Xmas tree pattern, as well
as one of the C. hederifolium pewter leaf - all happily living in the
greenhouse until I can plant them out. They are so cute! The flowers look
huge in the photos, but they are tiny - about the size of a dime. These
are not large plants, but incredibly perky and charming. I go gloat over
them quite a bit and have these visions of swathes of them - hard to do
with 4 plants, but, in my mind's eye...:-)
URL to the article is: (scroll down a bit for the Cyclamen photos - lotsa
photos so may load slowly for you)..
