Doreen,
1. I've heard that vermiculite is pretty good for starting seeds because
its sterile, however be sure you don't get the coarse grade. I personally
have never tried it. Vermiculite can be pricey for the amount of seeds I
like to start.
2. I've gotten the gnats before, too. It seems like they materialize out
of thin air! While I had a cloud of them in previous years, they have
never harmed my seedlings. They were more of a nuisance than anything and
seemed content just to sit on my plants' leaves and do nothing else. I've
had a fan blowing on the plants and that seemed to help keep their numbers
down.
