Filipendula rubra is also known as "Queen-of-the-Prairie". There are
some photographs at
http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/~kenr/Side.html
http://www.jungseed.com/catalog/images/seeds/js11809.jpg
In Illinois and Michigan it is protected and listed as threatened, in
Iowa and Maryland it is protected and listed as endangered, in Missouri
it is endangered, and in Virginia it is listed as imperiled. Make sure
that any plants that you purchase are from reputable sources who do not
collect from the wild.
Heronswood (
http://www.heronswood.com/
) has some Filipendula species and cultivars ('Nana' sounds interesting
to me), as does Specialty Perennials (
http://www.hardyplants.com/plants.htm
).
