I, too, have seen those beech hedges in England.  I have one suggestion.  
Youmight write the Royal Horticultural Gardens in Hamilton, Ontario.  They 
have a hedge trial garden and probably have some kind of beech hedge there.  
I was there a few years ago and recall it as being very extensive.  There is 
probably a website and and you might be able to write directly to them.  In 
the summer months, there are horticulturists on the grounds and it is easy to 
get answers.
