Re: Paul on daylilies

Hello again!

No-not his one-it looks like its one of those plants that the flower will
 not
open unless the nights are above 65-68 F.
That and the evergreen background make it uncertain for us, I guess. Cheryl
will know if it is growing around the Northeast. Thanks Paul.
I have decent luck with other Stamile hybrids - I have some from Pat and from Grace (she does minis). No dogs, a few stars. WEDDING BAND, CUSTARD CANDY and STRAWBERRY CANDY have done well here. All open well unless is gets to about 60 F or less over night.

Do you sell the most when they are in bloom? I like to see the daylily
flowering in a field. Preferably a field in zone 4.
So do I, but I am limited by two children to visiting as many gardens as I might like. Let me know if you want some northern sources!

  Marilyn in the PNW
probably has no problem with these, phooey. You PNW gardeners have some
great choices. I do know the name Stamile and that would be a Florida
grower. Well, we do have the snow!
I have gone out of my way to avoid well known hybridizers; I also don't want the same thing every one else is growing, so I seek out the lesser known ones. There are several northern hybridizers that are getting a lot of attention - Darrow, Cellars, Rose, Saxton, Sobek, Huben, Mason, Matzek to name a few from the New England area.

Also, don't rule out foliage habit as an indicator of hardiness - I grow many daylilies that are registered as evergreen or semievergreen that thrive and I have grown a few tender dormant daylilies too. The whole subject gets tossed around annually on the email daylily robin, usually acrimoniously. Since I buy mail order and sight unseen, I try to talk to the hybridizer about where the plant was grown during trials (many of the best hybridizers will guest plants to other areas to test hardiness, foliage habit, vigor; I have guested a few plants from Florida with mixed results). Most will be absolutely honest and tell you the truth; if it is an newer hybrid, many will refund your money or send you other plants.

My favorite way of acquiring new daylilies is to trade. I have many new friends as well as new daylilies.
