Re: Juanulloa aurantica/Solandra

Does it always bloom in January. If
so, I will put it on my list. Any plant that will bloom in January in
Wisconsin is a winner.
The Logee's website says that it will bloom year around if the light level is high enough, so I guess if it will set buds and bloom in a Wisconsin winter...

What is that huge bud behind it in the photo? Is it a bud? I am interested
in anything that will look good in January

The large bud in the backround belongs to a Solandra maxima, another Solanaceae (tomato, potato, petunia etc. family) member. Commonly called Chalice Plant, Chalice Vine, Cup of Gold, etc. This is from a cutting I took in Jamaica probably 15 years ago. Only blooms in mid winter for me - sets buds about the time I bring them in in October. Perfumes the whole room with the smell of coconut. The flowers open at night and remain open for about 3-4 days. Not exactly a windowsill plant, but can be contained in a 12 inch pot. Is amazingly tolerant of abuse. Cannot be overwatered and can take merciless pruning (not to soil level tho). I think if I could have only one plant (horrors!!!!!), this one might be the one. Of course, it has sentimental value for me as well.

Here is a link to a photo of the bud which opened 2 days ago:
