Thanks! I had a couple of passion vines and they went crazy, growing under 2 concrete dividers and into the yard. Ripped all the runners and the parent plants out this past summer.
Nan is right. There are many other species of passionflower which might be much more suited to your location. I've made an inquiry on the Passionflower List, on which I'm a member, and I'll let you know if there are any suggestions from Northern California enthusiasts.
In the meantime, what about Hardenbergia violacea , Thunbergia grandiflora or Pyrostegia venusta? Unfortunately, I cannot vouch for whether any of these might be invasive spreaders. I'm guessing an upward rampant grower might be OK, it's just you don't want one that spreads.
