Thanks for the suggestions- I'll need to look a couple of them up. And yes
you are correct, upward growth is fine- its the multiplying of plants that I
want to avoid. I'll be interested in the responses regarding the Passion
vines- the ones (I had 2 different varieties) I ripped out definitely grew
well here- just too well- and they well even in decent soil!

Nan is right. There are many other species of passionflower which
might be much more suited to your location. I've made an inquiry on
the Passionflower List, on which I'm a member, and I'll let you know
if there are any suggestions from Northern California enthusiasts.
In the meantime, what about Hardenbergia violacea , Thunbergia
grandiflora or Pyrostegia venusta? Unfortunately, I cannot vouch for
whether any of these might be invasive spreaders. I'm guessing an
upward rampant grower might be OK, it's just you don't want one that
spreads.
