RE: bletilla

Thanks Marge.  I will probably have to wait until they at least start to
come up,in order to find them.  I'll be watching closely over the next
couple of weeks so I can catch them as early as possible. Thanks for the
advise.

Theresa, when you dig them up, you'll find rhizomes connecting pretty
large pseudobulbs (if they've been in the ground for any length of
time).  As I recall, they rather fall apart for you if they're pretty
congested; not hard to separate.  Been a couple three years since I
dug all of mine up and replanted them in new soil - they'd been in
the same spot; a 5x5 planter for over 10 years.  I wasn't actually
trying to divide them, but ended up doing so.

I would have wherever you want to plant the divisions ready to
receive them; dig and replant as speedily as possible.  If you need
to separate them, use a sharp knife for a clean cut.  Some people
recommend dusting the cut with fungicide, but I have not done this.

Do your division as early in spring as you can; before growth
commences and they are usually early to rise.  In fact, my only trial
with these lovely plants is trying to make sure their early growth
doesn't get nipped by frost as that disfigures the foliage for the
season.

Note the depth of the pseudobulbs and rhizomes and replant at the
same depth.  If you get them too deep, they'll just pull themselves
back up, so save them the trouble:-)

Mine are not where they are susceptible to voles, but if you have
those stinkin' critters, watch out.  I have read posts from those
saying their whole stand was wiped out....if you have voles; plant in
wire baskets or something.
