Re: Starting seeds indoor

Welcome to the list Amy- there seems to be several of us who are new. Don't
be afraid to try anything from seed-some things will fail and not
necessarily because you did anything wrong. a good general treatment is to
sow in a good pasturized medium like peat/perlite or sand. Water lightly
and put in a cool (40-50F) place for about 1 to 2 months. Inspect regularly
and keep moist and ventilated. Some seeds may germinate, if so move to a
well lit warmer area. Most won't. Then move them to a warmer (60-70F)
location. Most should germinate in 1-4 weeks. Make sure to keep them moist
(not too wet), well ventilated, and in good strong light(next to a window).
Many seeds will germinate without the cold period, but a substantial won't
or only erratically. Damping off fungus can be a serious problem. The
ventilation usually prevents it and if not try a clove or cinnamon tea
spray. If seedlings get weak and leggy - not enough light. Transplant with
2 sets of true leaves into 4" pots or outside if its warm enough.
