Moved to a new location-Rita

Rita, the best thing you can plant in your clay this season is compost and
manure. Clay is alot different than the soil you had in Illinois. But it can
grow wonderful things with just a little help from you.the beginning of a
compost pile is already waiting for you in that piled up corner of your lot.
You might want to take all those branches and leaves from your brush pile
and rent a chipper for a day. Use all the leaves you can find. If nothing
else run them over with the lawn mower. Learn to compost or by any other
name rot things-slow or quickly. I made a huge compost pile today using oak
leaves (carbon) and alfalfa pellets (nitrogen) from the feed store.
Look for native plants if you do not want to improve your soil.(but even
they benifit from some improvement) Coneflowers and rudebekia will grow in
the clay. In fact if you do to much they will become too tall. I have Joe
Pye Weed in plain clay and sweetshrub. Sawtooth Sunflower and Mountain Mint
comes to mind also.
The advice you are getting here will get you started. Do go to your county
extension office(be sure and get all those free pamphlets), find you a
master gardener in the area, talk to a nursery.
You are also welcome to e-mail me.
