Sheila,
I have several raised beds under Maple trees that seem to be doing quite
well. The best ground cover I've found, to the point of becoming
overwhelming is violets. They are very shallow growing bulbs and are not
bothered whatsoever by the Maples, roots. In fact some of the clumps
produce densely blooming 12 - 15 inch mounds, and stay green late into
August. Of course tulips, daffodils and crocus compete well with the feeder
roots as do most hostas. In one of the shadier beds under a combination of
Maple, Elm and Box Elder I have astilbe, columbine, bachelor buttons, and
hosta all of which are multiplying each year.
It is true the feeder roots of the trees will continue to grow upward,
because that is how the tree gets water. Digging them up repeatedly might
not bode well for the Maple. I hope my experience gives you hope!

I made flower beds around 5 separate maple trees. The first year was fine

using the tiller to loosen the soil. Now that the beds are established,
the roots
from the trees are right on top of the ground and the plants can't grow. I
add compost
every year but the higher the beds get the higher the roots grow. Are there
plants
I can use in these beds? I've read that you should never plant around a
maple.
Is this true? Would it be possible to dig the shallow roots out every
spring and
plant annuals without harming the maples? The purpose of the beds was to
save the
trees from my husband's weedeater.
I made a bed around a sycamore at the same time and the plants are
beautiful - some
of my best looking dayliles and Sweet Williams are growing there.
