I'm sure non-gardeners and maybe even some gardeners would think I'm
cuckoo, but I really do find I have a relationship with my perennials,
regarding them as members of an extended family. I don't talk to them, out
loud at least, but I try to be as aware of them, their needs, changing
growth patterns, quirks as I try to be of family and friends. I don't have
quite the same feelings about annuals because they are sort of "here and
gone" in one brief season, but perennials give the opportunity for a
pleasant long-term relationship.
Seeing neglected, abused or thrown out plants evokes many of the same
feelings in me as latchkey kids and homeless unwanted animals. I'm not
saying they are the same, just that it strikes some of the same chords.
