How did everyone get so familiar with the latin names of the species? If
I take these names to my nursery would they know which plants I am
talking about. I am used to the common names of mostly annual plants. I
never grew many perennials in Illinois because there didn't seem to be
any that were hardy enough even though they were supposed to be
perennials.
Even my four-o-clocks which were self seeding came back too early the
following spring and died because of late frost.
The only things I had that came back year after year were my big
hibiscus and moon flowers that are like morning glories. I used them to
cover the neighboring fence that was a business and when they were
looking really good and covering the fence the guys would come with weed
wackers and destroy them. Better to see a nasty looking moving company
with gravel than a pretty flowery background.
One year I had really pretty giant blue morning glories covering the
fence and I came home from work to find them butchered.
I was so mad. Some of the guys were still hanging around and I was
yelling and crying as I cleaned up the mess. I think I scared the
bejesus out of them. But I was really mad, the plants were not hurting
anything.
So I planted the moon flowers to give them a headache for years to
come, even after I have moved away!
