It just happens over time. I like to read gardening books and they almost
always give both names. After awhile, you just remember them.

I would think any good nurseryperson would know them. I try to use the
botanical names when asking for things at a nursery because some common
names are similar ... cardinal flower, cardinal vine, cardinal climber, for
example. If you are calling around asking if they have something in stock
(so you don't have to drive a long distance) the more specific you are, the
better.
