Solarization would probably work great in zone 8. Cut everything down
close to the ground and remove the cut foliage. Water to a depth of 12".
Smooth 4 mil clear plastic over the ground and then seal the plastic all
around with dirt. Boards or bricks don't give a close enough seal.
Leave for 4-8 weeks. The temperature should rise to 140' for some time
to work. If any weeds grow and poke up the plastic, go in, remove the
weed and reseal.
Now that I think about it, it sounds like a lot of work. Have you
considered Roundup?
Throw lots of gypsum in with your soil mix to help break up the clay.
Contact John Van Beck at 0610343664@classic.msn.com for a list
of daffodil bulbs that will do good in your area. He lives in Florida
and shares the same type climate and grows thousands. Daffodil bulbs are
poisonous to rodents and gophers will ignor them.
