Here in Missouri we too have a lot of clay, red clay. It is quite
nutritious and a lot of plants grow in it with little amendment. However, I
usually try to add compost when I plant and to put mulch on the ground
around the plant. The mulch eventually breaks down and helps the soil. One
thing for sure, never, never, cultivate clay soil when it is wet. It will
make clods that are very hard to get rid of. In my garden last year we
tilled in a lot of leaves mulched up and also added gypsum, and some lime
as the clay soil here is usually quite acid. In Kansas, we had clay too, it
was black and gummy. I also amended it with leaves and grass clippings.
This will be my 5th year of gardening in zone 6 and in clay soil and so far
I complain more about the marauding animals rather than the soil. Jean
